February 2016 – Introducing Kybella

What is Kybella?
Kybella® is the first FDA approved medication that permanently destroys fat under the chin. If you have a double chin, and especially if you’ve been contemplating plastic surgery, then visit FreshSkin for this minimally invasive alternative. We are one of the first centers in the Chicago area to be trained and ready to offer Kybella.

Am I a Candidate?
Yes, you are. While the best results are seen in younger individuals with small fat pads, real improvement can be seen at any age and with any degree of severity.

How does it work, exactly?
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is very similar to what your body naturally produces to breakdown fat. It is combined with some important, inactive ingredients to ensure stability. Kybella is applied by making many, small and precise injections directly into the fat under the chin. While the medication breaks down those fat cells, the body works gradually over a 4-6 week period to remove what remains.

What should I expect?
Your chin, jaw and neck will be carefully examined and marked with a grid to identify the size, shape and depth of the fat pocket. A hand-held cooling device will be used to keep you comfortable. Kybella will be precisely injected into as many as 50 spots under your chin. Ice will be provided afterward to control any discomfort and swelling. The primary immediate reaction is usually a burning sensation that is soothed or eliminated with ice. Swelling is inevitable and the area may feel numb for several weeks without any cause for alarm.

Additional treatments are best performed after 6 weeks. Most patients will require 2-4 treatments, depending on the surface area and volume of fat. For patients who are highly overweight or obese, we recommend a medically supervised weight loss program to optimize your results.

Special note:
Patients who have prominent platysmal bands (which look like guitar strings under the neck) may not see optimal results and may need Botox® or Radiofrequency treatments to treat skin laxity in the neck.

What are the risks and side effects?
Common side effects include bruising, induration (thickening), redness and numbness that can last for up to 4 weeks, and trouble swallowing. Although we take very special care in marking the area, some patients have unusual anatomy and temporary damage can occur to the marginal mandibular nerve which would cause an asymmetric smile. This is very uncommon and usually resolves within days or weeks.
