April 2016 – Rosacea Awareness Month

Rosacea Awareness Month is about understanding how and why rosacea occurs, so that more people can do something about it. Rosacea is simply a condition where certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance. It may also produce small red bumps, sometimes with pus, and often resembling acne. Rosacea can irritate the eyes, cause itching and dryness, or inflame the nose to cause fibrous enlargement known as rhinophyma.

There are no definitive causes of rosacea, but a few of the most commonly reported triggers include spicy foods, hot foods or drinks, alcohol, certain medications, stress, sunlight, exercise, and hot saunas, showers, or baths. Clearly, not all of these will cause rosacea in everyone. In fact, some triggers (spicy food, exercise) are generally considered to be healthy ways to reduce inflammation – not so for those with Rosacea!

Typical treatments include acne medication, antibiotics, or laser/light treatments to reduce vessel size and the inflammatory response. Of course, the first line of defense is to learn the individual triggers that affect your skin, and to plan for avoidance or management of the situation. In particular, you’ll want to identify which foods affect you. There are plenty of anti-inflammatory diets out there, but none are customized to avoid rosacea triggers that vary with every individual.

Reducing inflammation and inflammatory foods is a very personal process that requires close attention to ingredients, spices, herbs, medication, etc. At FreshEnergy, we recommend the food sensitivity blood testing to identify which foods, medicines, molds, spices, etc. cause chronic inflammation and poor outcomes for you. Comprehensive results include a food rotation diet and suggestions of what to avoid, how often to eat certain foods, and a consultation to review how to interpret the report.

At FreshSkin / FreshEnergy we offer multiple programs that can be customized to your specific situation, using an array of evidence-based information, including medical history, body composition, food sensitivity testing, micronutrient and hormone levels. We even conduct DNA testing to learn about your personal biological makeup and how it predisposes you to do better or worse with certain diets and exercise. The one-size-fits-all approach is over.
