BBL Treatments and Why you should have them!

Broadband Light (BBL™) Treatments

I know a lot of you are asking, what the heck are these treatments anyways? (OK, so maybe you are not using the word, “heck”, but I get your gist.)

I will try to explain this as best I can, if it is too simplistic, I apologize ahead of time.

Let’s first start with what happens to our skin as we age.

skin anatomy.jpg

As we age, the effects of sun damage, environmental pollutants, genetics and the aging process itself affects the skin in the following ways.

  1. Melanocytes in the skin (see diagram) are “factories” that create pigment in response to genetics and UV exposure. The more UV exposure, the more pigment, the end result being the development of brown spots (sun spots).

  2. In the epidermal layer, see the nice deep pink portion? That is where fresh new skin cells are made, migrate upward and eventually die producing the stratum corneum (the lighter pink portion). When we are young, this happens daily, but as we age, this process slows down, making the skin look dull and lackluster.

  3. The DNA responsible for making collagen (the stuff that makes skin plump) and elastin (the stuff that makes skin “stretchy” gets turned off , leaving the skin wrinkled and thinner.

  4. Broken blood vessels develop, leaving the skin red and blotchy looking.

  5. The fat under the skin breaks down, leaving the skin with less support; resulting in the sagging that we all hate.

A Sciton phototherapy BBL™ procedure can reverse these effects and restore a healthy look to the skin. Here’s how.

Light, Light, fabulous light. The reason we all love sunlight so much is that there are some wavelengths that the sun provides that are not damaging in the same way as ultraviolet light (UV). Without getting into really complicated physics, the sunlight radiates many forms of light including blue light (good for killing the bacteria that cause acne), infrared which helps healing, ultraviolet which causes the damage indicated above, along with many other colors.

In a BBL™ treatment, we take advantage of the healing rays that are generated by the sun and shine them onto the skin. We are able to precisely pick several different filters, each of which are attracted by the pigment in the melanocytes and in the broken blood vessels. This results in a gentle heating of the area, causing a healing response. In addition, the light stimulates the DNA, turning it back on again, allowing for the production of collagen and elastin again.

The results are younger, thicker, healthier looking skin, and we have science to back this up now.  The magic number of treatments seems to be between 2 to 4 per year, the more treatments you have, the younger your skin appears.

We cannot say with scientific certainty that BBL treatments prevent skin cancer (squamous and basal cell), but I can state with confidence that my patients who have regular BBL treatments, seem to have fewer squamous and basal cell cancers.  Melanomas are another beast entirely, so I will not make any claims about that form of cancer. It will only be a matter of time when we collect enough data on this, and I will be able to make a scientific claim about this too!
