How Bellafill Works
Bellafill is classified as a combination dermal filler and volumizer. It is different from temporary injectable wrinkle fillers in that the product contains unique microspheres that are surrounded by bovine collagen. The tiny microspheres in Bellafill are made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), one of the most widely used materials in medicine since 1949. After an initial improvement in appearance, the body will gradually absorb the collagen, leaving the PMMA particles exposed and able to stimulate the body to produce collagen. The body does not absorb the microspheres, as they remain intact at the injection site and provide the support your skin needs for natural, long lasting results. The PMMA/Collagen reaction is what gives Bellafill its ability to last years.
In addition, on January 6, 2015, Suneva Medical announced that the FDA has approved the dermal filler, Bellafill, for the treatment of acne scarring.
Acne is the most common skin disorder in the U.S., affecting some 45 million people, 95% of whom may develop permanent scars from the disease. Because of its ability to stimulate the formation of collagen, Bellafill has been proven to perform well for the correction of severe scarring. After extensive study, the FDA has approved its use for patients over the age of 21.
“These types of acne scars affect millions of people and can have a profoundly negative impact on self-esteem and self-confidence,” said Nicholas Teti, Chief Executive Officer at Suneva Medical. “The results of this rigorous clinical study prove that Bellafill reduces the appearance of acne scars—providing a solution to this widespread skin condition that previously had limited treatment choices. Bellafill can have a transformational effect on a patient’s appearance and in turn, we hope an improvement in quality of life.”
How Does Bellafill Work to Treat Acne Scars?
At first the product adds volume to the skin, helping to lift and smooth the scarred tissue. Then, over time, the body reacts to the filler by creating natural collagen, giving the skin a natural pink color, and replacing some of the white, shiny scars.
“In the dermatology field, we regularly see patients who live with the burden of acne scarring—a physical and emotional trauma that leads many to feel depressed, less energetic and less social. With Bellafill, we have a tremendous opportunity to remedy acne scars and help patients live a happier, healthy life”, said Dr. Ava Shamban, Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UCLA.
What to Expect
All of these products are delivered by injection to specific locations on the face. After the injections are performed, you can expect mild swelling and redness at the treatment site. Occasionally, there may be mild bruising that can last from 3 to 7 days. Less common side effects include rash and itching that may last more than 48 hours. Other rare potential side effects may include lumps and granulomas, both of which can be treated. Depending on the severity of volume loss; multiple treatments may be required. After we have achieved the youthful look you desire, touch up treatments are performed every 12-15 months to keep up with the aging process.
