Cholesterol – What You Need to Know

High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease and for stroke, the first and fifth leading causes of death. But it usually has no symptoms, until it’s too late. So how do you know if your cholesterol is too high? No worries. We can do a quick, comprehensive blood test. And high cholesterol can be controlled with simple supplements and a few lifestyle changes, so now is the time to act!

We know that a healthy diet, strength training, and endurance exercise will all help to reduce cholesterol levels, specifically the ‘bad’ cholesterol that causes disease. We also know that statin therapy (cholesterol medication) helps lower cholesterol levels, but with fairly predictable side-effects. Current research shows that a number of more natural compounds, including Bergamet PRO+, one of our top selling products, helps reduce cholesterol significantly, with virtually no side effects.

September is National Cholesterol Education Month

From a health practitioner’s perspective, research data and guidelines on the subject are helpful; but the risk of disease and risk of an actual cardiac event are drastically different. Medical organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and the media alike focus on the big picture, but at FreshSkin we focus on you and your own, specific health history, family history, lifestyle, risk factors, and tolerance for different therapies.

Some offices use only the very general blood tests of Total Cholesterol, HDL (good), LDL (bad), and Triglycerides before suggesting treatment. These are often inadequate and may result in poor treatment… sometimes too much, sometimes too little. At FreshSkin we use a much more sensitive and comprehensive blood test panel to understand what makes up the HDL and LDL cholesterol, along with the inclusion of various genetic markers so we can understand your genetic risk and make more individualized recommendations. We also have blood panels that show markers for diabetes and insulin resistance, which are commonly found together with cardiovascular disease and may be mutual precursors.
