National Nutrition Month: Let’s nourish your body and your skin!

Are you and your family getting the nutrients you need? According to recent research from the University of Texas, even people who eat a healthy diet and take a multivitamin, 50% of those are still nutritionally deficient. Nutritional deficiencies in adults vary widely based on genetics, lifestyle, health status, etc. The most common nutritional deficiencies in healthy children are Vitamin B12, Folate, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Iron, and Zinc. When considering common childhood health issues such as obesity, fatigue, depression, and ADHD, other micronutrient deficiencies may be present.

Nutritional supplementation is not limited to micronutrients alone. Herbal supplementation has proven to be extremely helpful as well. Recent attention has been given to a common spice found in kitchen cabinets: Turmeric… specifically, Turmeric extract, called Curcumin. This easily added nutritional supplement has been shown to support cellular health, enhance breakdown of fats, protect the heart, improve circulation, promote antioxidant function, benefit the skin (specifically reducing inflammation associated with eczema and psoriasis), reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, joint pain and muscle soreness, reduce insulin resistance, and support a healthy response to environmental stress.

Over-the-counter multivitamins are not enough. If you have not heard about the recent news regarding over-the-counter supplements, here is a brief exerpt from the NY Times: “The authorities said they had conducted tests on top-selling store brands of herbal supplements at four national retailers — GNC, Target, Walgreens and Walmart — and found that four out of five of the products did not contain any of the herbs on their labels.” Source: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/02/03/new-york-attorney-general-targets-supplements-at-major-retailers/?smid=fb-share
