Joint Injections

We provide relief for mild to moderate arthritis, sports injuries and generalized joint discomfort utilizing platelet rich plasma and amniotic fluid.

The plasma and/or fluid is injected into various joints to help decrease inflammation and improve the fluid environment, allowing for better mobility and improved quality of life.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for Pain Relief

Research has found that there is a quicker method for healing which includes the use of your own body’s plasma in the form of platelet-rich plasma or PRP.

PRP is an autologous (sourced from the individual) concentration of a high number of platelets in a small volume of plasma and it is prepared by taking a blood sample, letting it sit until it becomes firm (clot) and then spinning it in a machine called a centrifuge.

This rapid spinning forces all the of red and white blood cells to the bottom of the tube, leaving a clear straw-colored fluid above. This fluid is full of cells called cytokines and growth factors which are capable of stimulating cellular growth, vascularization, proliferation, tissue regeneration, and collagen synthesis. These growth factors are critical to the healing process.

There are studies that have shown that in the knee PRP injections can help promote cartilage repair and relieve osteoarthritic symptoms if treated early enough. Even in late disease, PRP can potentially delay the need for joint replacement surgery.

The exact number of injection and treatment intervals are not completely well known, but for most patients having two injections spaced two weeks apart, can positively decrease pain and improve quality of life and physical activity levels.

What is Ascent Amniotic Fluid?

Amniotic fluid derived growth factors are more robust than PRP and allow us to decrease the number of injections required. For some patients, one injection may be all that is needed to reduce or eliminate pain and resume regular activities.

Ascent Amniotic Fluid is an injectable product that helps reduce inflammation and creates more cushion and lubrication in joints and tendons. It is derived from amniotic fluid which contains nutrients, and cells called cytokines and growth factors that are extremely potent. The company that manufactures the product obtains the amniotic fluid from fully screened and consented women at the time of Caesarian section. The fluid is then pulled through a patented process that removes only the components that are useful clinically. These components include TIMP-1 or tissue inhibitor of metalloproteases. Metalloproteases essentially are involved in break down something called the extracellular matrix in many human tissues, so having products that interfere with this is very helpful for healing.  Ascent also contains interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) which prevents the cartilage from degrading and hyaluronic acid which provides the lubrication and cushioning.

What are the Common Areas Treated?

Knees, shoulders, and hips.

What are the Risks?

The risks are those of a joint injection with the possibility of pain and infection. At FreshSkin we ensure the area is prepped with a disinfecting cleanser and utilize strict sterile techniques to ensure that this risk is minimal.  The donor amniotic fluid is screened for any and all communicable diseases and the process for extracting the necessary components ensures that there are only the useful components harvested. StimLabs, the manufacturer, has never had an adverse event reported to the FDA.

How long will it take to have symptom relief?

While many patients experience pain relief in just a few short days it may take several weeks. We recommend that you do not stress your treated area for approximately 2 weeks and avoid all anti-inflammatory medications which may interfere with the process. At 2 -weeks you will be able to start any rehabilitation exercises that have been recommended by us.

Is this procedure covered by insurance?

At the present time it is not covered by insurance, however you may be able to use Flexible Spending or Health Savings Account dollars.

How are these different from steroid injections?

Steroid injects can decrease inflammation, but often the results are only temporary. Steroids do not have any of the components that will help cushion or lubricate the joints. In addition, steroid injection can be associated with joint and ligament destruction if used frequently.
