What You Should Know
When veins in the legs become enlarged and painful, they are called varicose veins. This condition can vary from very small veins (spider veins) to very large ones. While commonly affecting the legs, varicose veins can also be seen elsewhere.
Veins found deep in the muscles have valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards. Genetic factors cause the veins to dilate. This means that the valves can’t prevent this “backflow,” which results in the development of new veins. Until recently, the “gold standard” for treating these veins was painful, surgical vein stripping.
