PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)
While we are confident that amniotic fluid derived growth factors are safe and effective, we value our patients and recognize that they may have some hesitation in having that form of therapy. For these individuals we utilize their own blood to “harvest” their own growth factors.
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a substance created by taking a sample of your blood in a special type of blood tube and then spinning it in a device called a centrifuge. This pushes all of the heavier cells; namely the red and white blood cells, to the bottom of the tube. What is seen in the top of the tube is a clear yellow fluid called plasma. In this plasma there are robust cells, proteins and other products that have several purposes, including helping your body heal and grow new cells. These cells are concentrated during the centrifuge process.
For this treatment we take several tubes of blood [depending on the size of the treatment area]. This plasma is then injected into the scalp using very thin needles.
PRP injections need to be done monthly for a minimum of three months. Whether we treat with an amniotic fluid-derived product or PRP, we strongly encourage our patients to have a series of low-level light therapy hair growing laser treatments.
