Sculptra® Aesthetic
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable that is used to gradually replace lost facial fat. What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is comprised of poly-L-lactic acid [PLLA] particles that have been used in human bodies for decades prior its use in 2004 for restoring lost volume in H.I.V. patients. In 2009, it received FDA-approval for cosmetic use. This injectable treatment is a popular procedure in some Hollywood circles, as it provides gradual natural-looking results.
How Does Sculptra Work?
The product is placed in areas of the face that are lacking volume and contribute to the “aged” look. Over the course of days to weeks, the PLLA particles are naturally replaced with collagen. The collagen continues to undergo change and maturation over several months, which allows for a gradual improvement of both the volume and texture, leaving you looking younger over time, rather than older.

Dr. Josie Tenore has been using Sculptra and Sculptra® Aesthetic in her practice since 2005 and is very selective in helping patients decide who will benefit from the product. She educates her patients to understand that while the product packaging and company website state that the results “last up to 2 years”, the newly- formed collagen can be retained for a longer period if taken care of. She suggests consuming 1000mg of Vitamin C twice per day, incorporating recommended physician-grade skincare into a twice daily routine, and staying away from environmental collagen toxins like UV light.
To keep up with the ongoing aging process, Dr. Josie also recommends a touch up treatment every 8-12 months to replenish the areas that have aged so that the youthful appearance is maintained. She loves combining Sculptra with platelet rich plasma as she has found the results to be quicker acting, and more robust.
What to Expect
Sculptra® Aesthetic is a product that is prepared specifically for you on the day of your treatment and is gently placed utilizing several injections until the facial features look restored and youthful. Common side effects may include bruising that can last from 3 to 7 days. After injection, the provider will massage all treated areas for about 5 – 10 minutes to encourage appropriate distribution of the product.
Over the course of the next 5 days you will be asked to massage the treated areas 5 times a day for 5 minutes each time.
You will have a follow up appointment between 2 and 4 weeks, depending on how much lost volume we need to restore to reassess your progress and plan for additional treatments.
In general, most patients are restored to their youthful self in 2-3 treatments, with maintenance treatments recommended every 8-12 months.
